When the Dot NET generic domain name extension was first established in 1985, together with the first domain name extensions on the World Wide Web, it was planned to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. Since there were no special terms about the usage of the TLD, though, dot NET domains were reserved and used for diverse purposes and by a huge number of people. This extension is an ideal substitution for dot COM, notably if the wanted domain with the latter TLD is not available for registration.
